The first day for Herman had been a quiet one, one that included a full survey of the new arrangement of the basking pond, tree stump and food area in his home. That night he discovered that there was a dog in this new place, and although they had ignored each other during the day, the next morning, Herman was reluctant to wander around. The temptation of food, however, motivated Herman to leave the tree stump and explore the contents of the food bowl. In addition to the kale there were dandelion leaves. The problem, as he saw it, was that dandelion leaves lay flat and were difficult to get into his mouth. He quickly decided that the dandelion leaves were too much work and ate the kale instead.
